Strathcona

Strathcona is one of Vancouver's first communities, it developed out of a collection of shacks and small buildings that surrounded the Hastings Mill. Strathcona has always been a working class community and today it is one of Vancouver's most socially and culturally diverse neighborhoods. Over 60% of the areas residents speak Chinese as their mother tongue, and it is not unusual to see people practicing tai chi in the local parks.

Over the past few years Strathcona has been going through a resurgence of sorts, many of the old shabby homes have been beautifully restored and have overflowing gardens of flowers and herbs. The area boasts mostly single family homes, although there are some apartments, rooming houses, and specially assigned social housing developments. During this resurgence many professionals and young families have moved into the area, which is driving up the housing prices. While it is not the west side, Strathcona is an up and coming community with many unique features as well as a lot of history.
